Description
Thread tape is colour coded for a reason, and using the wrong one is a genuine problem rather than a preference. The colour tells you the density and the approval: white for general water and air, pink for heavy duty, yellow for gas, and silver for stainless steel fittings.
Key features
- White — water and air, 0.4 g/cm², the general purpose tape
- Pink — heavy duty water and air, 1.2 g/cm², for larger threads and higher pressure
- Yellow — AGA gas approved, 1.2 g/cm², for natural gas and LPG
- Silver — for stainless steel fittings, 1.2 g/cm²
- Operating temperature 10°C to 200°C
- Maximum pressure 2000 kPa
Applications
- Sealing tapered threads on water and air lines
- Natural gas and LPG installations, using the yellow tape
- Stainless steel fittings, where the silver tape also helps prevent thread galling
- Plumbing, pneumatics and general fitting work
- Brass, steel and stainless threaded fittings
Compatibility and fitting
- Wrap in the direction the fitting turns, or tightening will unwind the tape off the thread
- Two to three wraps on general work, more on a coarse or worn thread
- Keep the tape off the first thread so it does not shed into the line
- Gas work must use the yellow AGA approved tape, not white
Why is gas tape a different colour?
Density and approval. Yellow is the denser 1.2 g/cm² tape and carries AGA gas approval, and it is what a gas fitter is required to use. White water tape on a gas thread is not a shortcut, it is a defect.
Why silver tape for stainless?
Stainless threads gall: the two faces cold weld under load and the fitting seizes. The denser tape gives more separation between the threads, which is as much about getting the fitting apart again as it is about sealing it.
