12mm John Guest Tube Insert

A tube insert is a short acetal sleeve, part JGTSM1209S, that goes inside the end of 12 mm tube and holds it round. A collet grips hard, and softer or flexible tube can deform under that grip; a deformed end has no clean face for the fitting to seal against, so the insert is fitted first and the joint made second.

Do I really need an insert?

John Guest calls it essential when the tubing is soft or flexible, because that is exactly where the wall collapses as the collet bites. On thick walled rigid pipe the tube holds its own shape, but the insert costs little and removes the question.

Can an insert be reused?

If the tube is cut back for a fresh joint, the old end goes in the bin with the insert in it. Keep a few spare so a re-terminated line is not held up by a part that costs less than the fitting.
