Choosing the right bilge pump

• Capacity: rated GPH figures are open-flow. Real output drops with head height and hose length, so allow margin over the bare minimum.
• Voltage: match the pump to the vessel's DC system, 12V or 24V.
• Switching: choose an auto model for unattended boats, or wire a manual pump through a three-position helm switch.
• Plumbing: run smooth-bore hose to a skin fitting above the waterline, with a loop to stop back-siphoning.
