Brass Gate Valve

Brass gate valve, BSP threaded, for isolation on water, air and general service lines. The rising gate gives a positive open and a positive shut with a clear bore in between, which is why gate valves stay on tank outlets and mains that get opened once and then left. Nine sizes: GV012 at 12 mm through GV100 at 100 mm.

Can I throttle flow with a gate valve?

It is not built for it. The supplier rates the valve for positive open and closed positions with steady flow when fully opened, which is a description of a gate that belongs all the way up or all the way down. For controlled adjustment use a needle valve; for frequent on and off use a ball valve.

How can I tell whether it is open?

By the stem. It rises as the gate lifts, so a stem standing proud is an open valve and a stem wound down is a shut one. On a line of valves in a plant room that is worth having, because you can read the whole row without touching anything.
