Screwed Brass Cross

A cross links four male threaded pipes at right angles from a single fitting. It is what you use where a line has to split two ways at the same point, or where a gauge and a drain both need to come off one junction, and a pair of tees would be clumsy.

Compatibility and fitting

• All four ports take a male thread
• Plug unused ports rather than leaving them open
• Support the fitting; four pipes meeting puts real load on one body
• Seal tapered threads with tape or a sealant rated for the fluid
• Brass into brass strips easily: tighten to seal, not to a hard stop
• Do not mix thread standards: a fitting cut to a different standard will start, feel tight and then weep

Cross or two tees?

A cross is one fitting and one sealing job at a single point. Two tees need a nipple between them and add length. Use the cross where all four lines genuinely meet in one place.

Does flow split evenly?

Only if the branches present the same resistance. Different lengths or bores downstream will bias the flow toward the easier path.
