Screwed Brass Nipple

A nipple is male thread at both ends. It joins two female ports directly, or extends a connection out of a recessed port so the next fitting can be reached with a spanner. It is the simplest fitting in the range and the one most often missing from the box.

Compatibility and fitting

• Both ends are the same size; use a reducing nipple to change size
• Seal tapered threads with tape or a sealant rated for the fluid you are carrying
• Brass into brass strips easily: tighten to seal, not to a hard stop
• Do not mix thread standards: a fitting cut to a different standard will start, feel tight and then weep

Nipple or barrel union?

A nipple is permanent in the sense that you have to unscrew the whole run to break it. A barrel union lets you separate the joint in place, which matters where equipment comes out for service.

Why is my nipple leaking at one end only?

Almost always the sealant or tape on that end, or a thread that has been cross started. Back it out, clean both threads, and restart the fitting square by hand.
