Screwed Brass Plug

A plug closes a female port. It screws into the thread and seals it, so an unused tapping on a manifold, a pump body or a valve can be blanked off rather than left open. Every plant room has a plug somewhere doing exactly this.

Compatibility and fitting

• A plug goes into a female port; use a cap over a male thread
• Leave a plug in a port you might use later rather than an open thread that will corrode
• Seal tapered threads with tape or a sealant rated for the fluid you are carrying
• Brass into brass strips easily: tighten to seal, not to a hard stop
• Do not mix thread standards: a fitting cut to a different standard will start, feel tight and then weep

Plug or cap?

The plug is the male one and goes in. The cap is female and goes over. If you are looking into a threaded hole, you want the plug.

Should I use tape on it?

On a tapered thread, yes, or a sealant rated for the fluid. A plug is a pressure boundary like any other fitting and it needs the same care.
