Screwed Brass Reducing Nipple

A reducing nipple is a nipple with a different thread size at each end. It joins two female ports that do not match, which happens constantly when equipment from different makers ends up in the same line.

Compatibility and fitting

• Specify both sizes when ordering, large end first
• Where the port is female and the fitting male, you want a reducing bush instead
• Seal tapered threads with tape or a sealant rated for the fluid you are carrying
• Brass into brass strips easily: tighten to seal, not to a hard stop
• Do not mix thread standards: a fitting cut to a different standard will start, feel tight and then weep

Reducing nipple or bush?

Both change size. The nipple has male threads at both ends and joins two female ports. The bush is male outside and female inside, and screws into a port. Look at what you are joining.

Can I reduce two sizes in one step?

Usually yes, and it is better than stacking adapters. Every extra joint is another thread that can weep.
