York Spring Check Valve

A York spring check valve carries a spring behind the disc, so it shuts as soon as forward flow stops rather than waiting for reverse flow to push it closed. That fast close is what keeps a column of water from running back through a pump when the power drops. BSP threaded, in eight sizes from YCV10 at 10 mm to YCV65 at 65 mm.

Compatibility and fitting

• One way flow, so the valve has to go in the right way round
• Threaded adaptors for the inlet side: brass fittings
• The stainless steel mesh strainer inserts run YCVS12 to YCVS65 and cover the same line sizes
• Where low resistance matters more than a fast close, the brass swing check runs 12 mm to 100 mm

Spring check or swing check?

A spring check closes quickly because the spring does the work, which suits a pump outlet where reverse flow would otherwise slam the valve shut. A swing check uses a hinged disc that opens on flow alone and closes when the flow reverses, which suits a gravity line where you do not want to spend head pushing a spring open.

Which way round does it go in?

It passes flow one way only, so it has to be fitted with the flow. Installed backwards it simply holds the line shut, and on a pump discharge that shows up as no delivery at all rather than as an obvious leak, which makes it an expensive five minutes to get wrong.
