Stainless Steel Skin Fitting

A skin fitting is the through-hull that carries water in or out of the boat, and in salt water the grade of the stainless decides how long it lasts. These are made from 2205 or 316 grade stainless steel, the two grades specified for immersed marine work, in nine bores from 12 mm to 100 mm. Part numbers run SFSS12, SFSS20, SFSS25, SFSS32, SFSS40, SFSS50, SFSS65, SFSS80 and SFSS100.

Compatibility and fitting

• Order on the bore of the hose or pipe the fitting has to serve, not on the hole in the hull
• Bronze in the same size range is stocked as bronze skin fittings, and the two materials should not be mixed on one penetration
• Clamp hose onto the tail with stainless bands from the Tridon clamp range
• Discharge hose for sanitation runs is in white marine sanitation hose

What grade of stainless are these skin fittings?

2205 or 316 grade. That is the fact worth checking on any through-hull, because a lower grade of stainless looks identical on the shelf and pits in salt water. 316 and duplex 2205 are the grades supplied here.

How do I pick the right size?

Work from the hose or pipe it connects to. The nine sizes run 12 mm to 100 mm and are also listed in inches from 1/2" to 4", so a 25 mm hose takes the SFSS25, which is the 1" fitting.
