Stainless Steel Barrel Union

A barrel union is the joint you put in so the run can come apart again. Two threaded halves are drawn together by a centre nut, so a pump, a valve or a filter can be lifted out by undoing one nut instead of unwinding the pipework. Nine sizes in 316 stainless from 1/4" to 2 1/2", with a maximum working pressure of 150 psi.

Applications

• Either side of a pump so it can be pulled for a seal change
• Around a filter housing or a strainer that is cleaned regularly
• At the end of a fixed run where a hose assembly is swapped out
• Marine engine bays and food plant where the line is broken often

Compatibility and fitting

• Both ends take a male BSP thread, typically a hex nipple
• Where the joint is permanent, a round socket costs less and is shorter
• Fit alongside an isolating ball valve so the line can be shut and broken
• Full range: stainless steel fittings

Where should the union go?

Downstream of the isolating valve and as close to the equipment as the space allows. Put it the other side and the line has to be drained to break the joint. On a pump, one union each side means the whole unit lifts out in a couple of minutes.
