Stainless Steel Round Socket

A round socket is female both ends: it joins two male BSP threads of the same size, or extends a run of pipe by one more nipple. The barrel is round rather than hexagonal, so it tightens with a pipe wrench rather than a spanner. Twelve sizes in 316 stainless, 1/8" to 4", to a maximum working pressure of 150 psi.

Compatibility and fitting

• Takes a hex nipple at each end to continue a run
• To join two different thread sizes, use a reducing socket
• Where the joint has to come apart later, fit a barrel union

Socket or barrel union?

A socket makes a permanent joint: to undo it, something either side has to turn. A union has a nut in the middle, so the two halves separate without rotating the pipework. Use sockets on the run and a union wherever a pump or valve has to come out for service.
