Description
A hex nipple is male BSPT at both ends with a hexagonal collar in the middle, so it can be pulled up with a spanner instead of a wrench on the thread. It is the fitting that joins two female ports, and the one you keep most of in the drawer. Twelve sizes in 316 stainless from 1/8" to 4", rated to 150 psi.
Key features
- Male BSPT thread both ends, same size each side
- Hex collar for a spanner rather than a pipe wrench
- 316 stainless steel
- Maximum working pressure 150 psi
- 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4", 1", 1 1/4", 1 1/2", 2", 2 1/2", 3" and 4"
Applications
- Joining a female valve port to a female tank boss
- Standing a gauge or a strainer off a manifold
- Building threaded runs on wash-down and dosing skids
- Marine through-hull and seacock assemblies
Compatibility and fitting
- Screws into any female BSP port, including a round socket or a female tee
- Where the two ports differ in size, use a reducing nipple
- Blank a spare port with a hex plug
- More threaded fittings: stainless steel fittings
Hex nipple or reducing nipple?
A hex nipple is the same thread size at both ends. A reducing nipple is not, and it saves a joint whenever the two ports differ, for example 1" x 1/2". Count the ports first: two females need a nipple, two males need a socket.
