Screwed Brass Adaptor Male Female

The No. 72 adaptor is male at one end and female at the other, usually in two different sizes, so it changes thread size in a straight run without turning a corner. It is the fitting that makes a 3/8 inch outlet accept a 1/4 inch line.

Compatibility and fitting

• Specify both threads: the female size and the male size
• Where you are joining two female ports, use a nipple instead
• Seal tapered threads with tape or a sealant rated for the fluid
• Brass into brass strips easily: tighten to seal, not to a hard stop
• Do not mix thread standards: a fitting cut to a different standard will start, feel tight and then weep

Adaptor or reducing bush?

The bush sits inside a port and reduces it. The adaptor extends the run and changes gender as well as size. If you need the connection to move outward, take the adaptor.

Male or female first?

Quote the female size then the male, matching how the variants are listed, so there is no ambiguity about which end is which.
