Screwed Brass Y Piece

A Y piece splits one line into two at 45 degrees rather than the right angle a tee gives you. The gentler angle keeps the flow moving instead of turning it hard, which matters where a tee would cause turbulence or where the two branches need to run alongside each other.

Compatibility and fitting

• Check the thread gender on all three legs against what you are connecting
• Where the branch has to leave at a right angle, use a tee instead
• Seal tapered threads with tape or a sealant rated for the fluid you are carrying
• Brass into brass strips easily: tighten to seal, not to a hard stop
• Do not mix thread standards: a fitting cut to a different standard will start, feel tight and then weep

Y piece or tee?

A tee turns the branch through 90 degrees and is the more compact fitting. A Y splits at 45 degrees, which is easier on flow and neater where both branches head the same general direction.

Does the branch split the flow evenly?

Roughly, if both branches present the same resistance. Different lengths or different bores downstream will bias the flow toward the easier path.
